National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day

September 18 is the fourth annual observance of National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. This day highlights the importance of preventing HIV infection in the aging population and the need for greater understanding of and ability to address the challenges of aging with HIV/AIDS. The theme of the awareness day this year is “Aging is a part of life; HIV doesn’t have to be.”

The 2009 HIV Surveillance Report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the following statistics in the 40 states with confidential name-based HIV reporting:

• In 2008, an estimated 202,560 people 50 years of age or older were living with HIV infection.
• From 2006 to 2008, the largest percentage increase in the number of people living with HIV infection was among people 60 to 64 years old.
• From 2006 to 2009, the rate of new HIV diagnoses increased among people 55 to 59 years old.
