The purpose of the webinar is to discuss the complexities and issues related to HIV/AIDS and older adults. First, The AIDS Institute will provide a brief overview of National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day and the ongoing educational campaign as well as emphasize the need for increased HIV awareness among the older adult population. Next, an overview of the data showing trends in the HIV aging population will be presented. Then, we will examine issues related to prevention and outreach as well as explore care and treatment challenges. Then, an example of a program from the field will be presented. Finally, participants will be provided updates around HIV testing coverage, specifically around Medicare.

2011 NHAAAD Event Registration
The AIDS Institute, along with other national partners are proud to announce the theme of this year’s campaign, “Aging is a part of life; HIV doesn’t have to be”, an effort recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of HIV/AIDS Policy, and www.aids.gov.
The National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness day focuses on the challenging issues facing the aging population with regards to HIV prevention, testing, care and treatment. In addition, there is an increased need for prevention, research, and data targeting the aging population, medical understanding of the aging process and its impact on HIV/AIDS.
The campaign focuses on:
- People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) who are aging with the disease or already over 50 at the time of their initial diagnosis,
- Increasing the use of protection from HIV infection, especially among the baby boomer population, and
- The increasing number of grandparents becoming the primary guardians for children who have lost their parent(s) to HIV/AIDS.
2011 NHAAAD Event Registration
In an effort to continually expand awareness about HIV/AIDS among the aging population, organizations and community members are invited to develop, implement and participate in awareness activities and events on or around September 18th.
Past examples of activities and ways organizations and individuals can become involved:
1. Host a free HIV screening event
2. Encourage and promote HIV testing among older Americans
3. Provide HIV prevention and education messages to older Americans
4. Provide resources for linkage to treatment and care for HIV infected older Americans
5. Organize health fairs that focus on HIV/AIDS and healthcare in older Americans
6. Encourage older Americans to practice safer methods to prevent HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s)
7. Conduct events at senior community centers or nursing home facilities
8. Talk to an older adult in your family about getting tested
9. Engage leaders in the faith community to participate in local, regional, or national events on or around NHAAAD
10. Highlight how your programs can incorporate HIV/AIDS education for older Americans
The AIDS Institute recently conducted the “Call for NHAAAD volunteers” to participate in the three NHAAAD workgroups to assist with the planning efforts. They are as follows: Media, Material Review, and Evaluation.
Media Workgroup Information:
The National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Media Workgroup Conference calls are scheduled regularly. Please contact Michelle Scavnicky for more information at MScavnicky@TheAIDSInstitute.org
Media Workgroup Member Roles and Responsibilities include the following:
- Actively participate on a minimum of 2 workgroup conference calls annually
- Assist in creating a theme for the annual awareness day
- Assist in the promotion of NHAAAD initiatives
- Assist in the development of NHAAAD Press Releases and Media Advisories
- Assist in mobilizing and planning effective media strategies for NHAAAD
- Assist with utilizing various marketing tools and links to resources for NHAAAD
- Assist in cross promotion of NHAAAD through organizational websites
- Assist with promotion of NHAAAD event registration on TAI’s website
- Assist in planning local, regional or national NHAAAD events
- Actively participate in media events surrounding the annual awareness day
Material Review Workgroup Information:

Material Review Workgroup Member Roles and Responsibilities include the following:
- Actively participate on a minimum of 2 workgroup conference calls annually
- Assist in creating a theme for the annual awareness day
- Assist in the promotion of NHAAAD initiatives
- Assist in the review and editing of NHAAAD materials with new emerging data, if necessary. Documents include: NHAAAD Community Planning Guide, Brochure, Fact Sheet, Five States at a Glance, Poster, and Community Invite Letter
- Assist in the review and editing of NHAAAD webpage on TAI’s website
Evaluation Workgroup Information:
The National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Evaluation Workgroup Conference calls will be scheduled regularly. Please contact Michelle Scavnicky for more information at MScavnicky@TheAIDSInstitute.org
Evaluation Workgroup Member Roles and Responsibilities include the following:
- Actively participate on a minimum of 2 workgroup conference calls annually
- Assist in creating a theme for the annual awareness day

- Assist in the development of evaluation tools including pre and post event surveys
- Assist in the review and editing of event registration process for NHAAAD
