Govt to take position on how to use Truvada

The government is yet to come up with a position on Truvada, a pill which was  recently discovered to prevent HIV infection.

A study conducted by BOTUSA, which is a partnership between Botswana and the American government and funded by the latter’s Centre for Disease Control revealed that if taken daily, Truvada can prevent HIV infection among heterosexuals.

The study involved more than 1,200 men and women in Botswana. About half got a single dose of Truvada daily and the the other half got a fake pill.

An analysis of people who were believed to be regularly taking the pill found four of those on Truvada got infected with HIV, compared to 19 on the dummy pill.

That means the real drug lowered the risk of infection by roughly 78 percent, researchers said.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Director of HIV/AIDS in the Ministry of Health, Dr Refeletswe Lebelonyane said they were yet to decide on the way forward with regards to the findings of the study.

“The pill has to be registered first before it can be made available but besides that we have a huge budget for ARVs because we want to increase the CD4 count of those who are already living with the virus,’’ she said.

Botusa Principal Investigator, Dr Poloko Kebaabetswe said for the sake of the research the pill had to be taken daily to see if it was effective but more research was being done to determine other means of administering it.
“What needs to be determined now is how sexually active people can take the pill to avoid infection,’’ she said.

Meanwhile United Nations health officials recently announced that Gilead Sciences, an American company, which is the major producer of AIDS drugs including Truvada have agreed to allow some of its drugs to be made by generic manufacturers, potentially increasing their availability in poor countries.
