AIDS Project Los Angeles: An Urgent Message about AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES Confusion and the Fight Against AIDS

An Urgent Message about AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES Confusion and the  Fight Against AIDS

I find myself shocked but unsurprised at this news. Waiting to hear more.

A misleading and confusing new event is now raising significant questions among people who are concerned about HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles. Please read this urgent message for important information.

Each day at AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), your donations save lives. For the past 25 years, money raised from the annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles has provided vital medical and dental care, food and shelter, mental health counseling, and much more for many of the more than 63,000 Angelenos now living with HIV/AIDS. Together, we work to prevent countless new infections by supporting unbiased, effective HIV prevention and testing efforts. We also work tirelessly to expand and defend vital HIV/AIDS programs at all levels of government.

But now, an AIDS-oriented festival with a strikingly similar name has been scheduled just three weeks before AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES. The event, “California AIDS Walk,” produced by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), uses marketing materials, artwork, and language that are remarkably similar to those of AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES. Like many of our supporters, we learned of this event through billboards and online advertising, as AHF made no attempt to provide a courtesy notification. We urge you: Do not be misled!

Let’s be clear: APLA and AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES strongly support any legitimate attempt to raise money for the fight against AIDS. But we are troubled by an event that seems to capitalize on the significant trust and goodwill that AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES has generated over the past three decades.

  • Will be held on October 17, 2010. Register now at
  • Has raised more than $69 million for the fight against AIDS in Los Angeles.
  • Benefits AIDS Project Los Angeles and dozens of other local AIDS organizations through its Community Coalition Initiative, which allows other HIV-related groups to benefit from the proven fundraising model of AIDS Walk Los Angeles without the expense of producing a new event.

AIDS Project Los Angeles:

  • Offers direct client services like free food, dental services, in-home health care, mental health counseling, and much more to thousands of L.A. residents who live with HIV/AIDS and have nowhere else to turn. APLA clients are overwhelmingly poor (most live on less than $10,000 per year); are largely people of color; and too often face hunger, addiction, mental illness, homelessness, stigma, and more.
  • Fights AIDS where it hits hardest, reaching more than 3,000 men and women through our face-to-face HIV prevention and free HIV testing programs. We operate the most comprehensive prevention programs in the county that target those highest at risk — gay men (particularly gay men of color), youth and substance users.
  • Plays a leadership role to expand and defend programs at the federal, state and local levels that people living with HIV/AIDS depend on. APLA holds our leaders accountable to end HIV-based discrimination and to protect civil rights.
  • Exceeds the charitable guidelines of the Better Business Bureau in its efficiency and low overhead costs. APLA wins frequent praise from major corporate and private contributors for its exceptional efficiency, low operating costs and sound ethical practices.

The participants in AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES know exactly why they’re walking: to fund these vital services and to end AIDS in Los Angeles. In fact, about one out of every two dollars that APLA raises to fund this work comes from AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES.

An important note: One of APLA’s primary goals is to work with our community to raise private funds to fight AIDS. As such, we are disappointed that another organization with a similar mission is not willing to come together toward a common goal. We have made numerous efforts to request reasonable changes to clarify these two distinct events. To our surprise, we have received no official response, while their misleading marketing efforts continue expanding.

Let us be clear, however, that this distraction will only strengthen our resolve to eliminate AIDS and make the 26th Annual AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES the most successful in our history. We appreciate the outpouring of support that we have received since this situation has come to light, and we urge you to join us in making the 26th Annual AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES the most successful ever. In these difficult economic times, your participation and support are absolutely critical.
