A funny thing happened to Board of Supervisors President David Chiu last night, while making his evening round of speeches.
Somebody asked him for pot.

“You got the compassion? Who’s got weed?” asked an attendee of yesterday’s monthly dinner/medical cannabis giveaway held by Axis of Love, a low-income medical cannabis patients’ advocacy group, where Chiu delivered the keynote address.

Michael Onyiego, Voice of America: Doctors Battle Psychological Trauma in Dadaab, Kenya Refugee Camps

Doctors Battle Psychological Trauma in Dadaab, Kenya Refugee Camps
by Michael Onyiego, July 28, 2011

Dadaab, Kenya — In humanitarian crises, the immediate focus is often on providing food, shelter and medical treatment to those in need. But in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camps, there is a small but concerted effort to help treat the psychological trauma suffered by refugees who have fled a lifetime of conflict.

In the Doctors Without Borders hospital at the Dagahaley camp in Dadaab, Kenya, clinical psychologist Bethuel Isoe-Nyachieng’a tries to calm an hysterical patient who has recently arrived from Somalia. His name is Abdi Ibrahim, a 21-year-old who, until just a few weeks ago, was perfectly normal. His brother explained that Ibrahim began complaining nearly five months ago of worsening headaches and body pains. During the journey to the Dagahaley camp, his condition suddenly deteriorated. One night, Ibrahim woke up screaming and trying to remove his clothes.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the AIDS epidemic, AARP Magazine, a health magazine for people 50 and over, spotlighted six long-term survivors from around the country in their article, “AIDS: 30 Years Later.” [also published a timeline of "memorable milestones in the ongoing fight against this epidemic," not my phrasing ---rk]

The diverse group, which included Olympic swimmer Greg Louganis and James Bender, a past This Positive Life interviewee, discussed a range of topics including stigma from the early days, being diagnosed in a pre-antiretroviral America and societal complacency around condom use.

Zerline Hughes, Justice Policy Institute: Private Prison Companies Want You Locked Up

chers—

This post has been in limbo for a month. Didn’t click on the right button or something. Still interesting, though. These are companies that wield a notable amount of political clout in Arizona, among other places, because they make big political donations, which favors are returned when setting policy . . .

Private Prison Companies Want You Locked Up
New report highlights political strategies of companies working to make money through harsh policies and longer sentences

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Over the past 15 years, the number of people held in all prisons in the United States has increased by 49.6 percent, while private prison populations have increased by 353.7 percent, according to recent federal statistics. Meanwhile, in 2010 alone, the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the GEO Group, the two largest private prison companies, had combined revenues of $2.9 billion. According to a report released today by the Justice Policy Institute (JPI), not only have private prison companies benefitted from this increased incarceration, but they have helped fuel it.

Gaming the System: How the Political Strategies of Private Prison Companies Promote Ineffective Incarceration Policies, examines how private prison companies are able to wield influence over legislators and criminal justice policy, ultimately resulting in harsher criminal justice policies and the incarceration of more people. The report notes a “triangle of influence” built on campaign contributions, lobbying and relationships with current and former elected and appointed officials. Through this strategy, private prison companies have gained access to local, state, and federal policymakers and have back-channel influence to pass legislation that puts more people behind bars, adds to private prison populations and generates tremendous profits at U.S. taxpayers’ expense.

Dear Foreigner-Haters: Immigration is Good for You
by Juan Cole, July 28, 2011

Why is there such strong anti-immigrant sentiment in the industrialized democracies, and why does it get focused on Muslims? The shooting rampage and bombing by anti-immigrant Islamophobe Anders Breivik has raised these questions to a fever pitch. But the answers are just not obvious.

A Tale of Two Fathers
by By Gretchen Livingston, Senior Researcher, and Kim Parker, Associate Director, Pew Social & Demographic Trends, June 15, 2011

Overview

The role of fathers in the modern American family is changing in important and countervailing ways. Fathers who live with their children have become more intensely involved in their lives, spending more time with them and taking part in a greater variety of activities. However, the share of fathers who are residing with their children has fallen significantly in the past half century.
